Bridget and Kylie AoW: NBA Playoffs

NBA Playoffs: Same Old Story or Writing a New Narrative

  1. Do you think that a Cavs vs Warriors IV final would be good or bad for the NBA and the
ratings of the final? Based on what you read in the article, explain why or why not.
  1. How large of a role do you think a team’s health impacts their chance at winning in the
playoffs? Do you think that teams tend to “give up” when a star player is out from injury?
  1. How much of a role does home court advantage have during playoff season in the NBA,
or sports in general? Do you think home advantage is more beneficial to teams that have
playoff series’ ie the NBA, MLB, and the NHL, or more beneficial to teams who play in a

“one and done” playoff scenario, ie the NFL?

I don’t really think it would hurt or help NBA ratings of the final. I think some benefits towards viewership could be that fans want to see one team upset the other, or the whole rematch scenario. This definitely could draw viewers in. One way it could hurt viewership however is fans being turned off by the warriors and the cavs being in the final for the 4th straight time.

I don’t think a team necessarily gives up, but it definitely lowers the morale of players, especially because so many media outlets will report that the team is done for. For example, the article we read mentions how the injuries will sideline the celtics. “There’s always a but. They did not stay healthy. Hayward played five minutes before his season catastrophically ended with an ankle injury. Irving underwent two knee surgeries and is done for the playoffs. Marcus Smart is out until late April after thumb surgery. Reserve big Daniel Theis was lost to knee surgery. So they’re as healthy as an Ebola ward.” Most players probably check the news, so seeing this could lower morale. I do think the hype of the playoffs and wanting to win can counter this though.

  2. 1. Cavs vs Warriors IV would be good for the NBA ratings, but bad for the fans who want some change. Steph, KD, and Lebron are 3 of, if not the biggest names in modern sports. Obviously having these 2 teams would bring the most money and ratings, however more hardcore fans want to see change.
    2. We saw it in 2015, Kyrie and K love went down and Lebron still took the warriors to 6 games. Lebron definitely does not give up, can't really say the same for other players (not saying they do or don't, just don't know). Obviously losing star players will affect your chances of winning.
    3. I think home court advantage is less important in the NBA than NFL, however still very important non the less. With the NFL or other one and done playoff styles, the crowd is even more intense and there is much more pressure than a non elimination game.

  3. 1. I do not think another Cavs vs. Warriors final would be good for the league's ratings. We have already seen this matchup for the past 3 years and fans are most likely getting tired of it. In addition, other less playoff common teams and up-and-coming teams are in the playoffs this year which has intrigued more fans. Therefore, having another one of those teams may be better for NBA ratings than another Cavs vs. Warriors rematch in the finals.
    2. I think it plays a big role on a team's chances in the playoffs if the team's best player gets injured and can't play. That being said, I don' think teams usually "just give up" in these scenarios as if they are in the playoffs already, there is no point in not trying to win. I believe most players have a championship as their end goals.

  5. Cavs vs Warriors IV would be terrible for the fans but amazing for the ratings of the game. In these two teams roster, it’s filled by allstar talent like lebron james, steph curry, Klay thompson, etc. With these two dominant teams consistently in these final games it would steer fans who are hardcore about their own team which happens to be a lot of fans in the NBA.
    2) Team health is everything to winning any game let alone the playoffs. If the celtics did not lose Gordon Hayward with an freak injury early in the season, him along with Kyrie would make a powerful presence in the conference. I think teams do not give up when a star player is out. I actually think they become motivated to do better and truly show the people what they could do. Portland Trailblazer Cj Mccollum, dropped 35 whilst star Damian Lillard suffered from an injury.

  7. 1. I think that a Warriors Cavs NBA final is good and bad for the NBA. It is good because those teams have a lot of stars which will draw a lot of attention to the finals. These teams have played against each other the past three years and the warriors lead 2-1, so a lot of storylines can be created. These are arguably the best in the league and the finals would be the two best teams which is what everyone wants. It is bad for the NBA because there is no change year by year. Everyone in offseason signs big names but if these teams never make the finals there is no point. Fans want to see different teams in the thick of things.
    2. I think in any sport in order for your team to make a deep postseason run you need to be healthy. Health plays a huge role in a teams outcome. Right now Joel Embid is injured for the 76ers and they lost last night. Steph Curry is also injured but for the Golden State Warriors. Although these teams may win their respective series they must be healthy in order to win the championship

  8. 1. I think a Warrior vs. Cavs rematch would be bad for the NBA. Having the same finals matchup two years in a row is fine because people love to see one team get revenge for the previous year. Having the same finals matchup for three years in a row is fine because would think of it as a best of three, "who wins the series", type of championship. However, having the same finals matchup for 4 years in a row is just overkill and people will start to get bored. Viewers want change. If an underdog were to beat the Cavs or Warriors in the Conference Finals, that would add way more excitement to the playoffs than a fourth rematch.

    2. Star players are called star players because they're the best on their team or even one of the best in the entire league. As in any team sport, losing a star player can be extremely detrimental to their chances of winning. Very few teams have players to adequately replace their star player, so when they go down with an injury, they are bound to become a weaker team. Although they might try harder to replace this player or get a win for them, its not easy in such a talented league to overcome these types of obstacles.

  9. I don't believe that a Cavs Warriors matchup will help the NBA in any way. Personally, I am kind of biased because I'm not that much of a basketball person but I used to watch the NBA Playoffs. Now, they are far too repetitive mainly because of the same teams being in the championship. I would definitely like to see another team make a deep run, possibly win the whole thing. This year could be the year that this happens, with the raptors, celtics, and rockets all being legitimate contenders. A change is needed to gain even more popularity for the league.
Star players being absent of course hurt a team because by definition they are the best on the team therefore carrying a large share of all the points a team scores and prevents other teams from scoring. Teams can rarely replace their star players so naturally everyone is surprised when they continue success. That is why everyone is surprised by the Celtics' continued success this year. Home field/court advantage does make a difference but is definitely more prominent during the one and done playoff games.

  10. 1) I believe it will be good for NBA finals ratings. Lebron James and Steph Curry are the two most popular basketball players in the world. People from all over the world would tune into this match up to watch the saga continue. Then again for the more loyal NBA fans, I believe a 4th Cavs Warriors NBA finals would cause some frustration.

    2)
Having a star player injured is make or break for an NBA teams chances. In the first Cavs Warriors matchup both Kyrie and Kevin Love were injured. With both of these stars injured, the cavs did not stand much of a chance to win. I don't think the team gives up, but I do think it is hard to win without your star player.

  11. I think people like sports dynastys to be honest. So I think a Cavs vs Warriors IV final might attract an strong audience if the network hypes it the right way. I think people will wonder what is so magical about these two teams that none of the other 14 can stop them. Look at the Patriots, too.  They live in the Superbowl and people still watch. Even if you love to hate a dynasty team, you will watch with the hope of seeing that team be defeated.
I think its really sad when a team makes the playoffs, but after a long season they are depleted and a player or two is not healthy.  Then the team is just not the team.  Look at the Packers this year in the NFL without Aaron Rogers. Health impacts everythings.  Very rarely do back-up players come out of the wings and thrill a team. Aaron Rogers was Favre’s backup, which is interesting. I don’t think any professional team will give up without a star because they all have pride and and talent. Money matters but I think these people care about the sport and the competition.
As for home advantage, I think it leads to a sense of comfort and courage. But I think the best team will win no matter where the game is played. I do think it might matter more for “one and done” teams because they do not have the discomfort of travel and dealing with a different town and its tone. Being at home just can make a team more relaxed.

  13. I think it would be bad for the NBA if the same two teams face each other in the final for the fourth time. It illustrates the lack of action on the part of the NBA to keep the teams even and fair. Because these two teams could be potentially facing each other again, it demonstrates that there is little to no rules preventing a true dynasty within the basketball world. I know I personally would start to get disinterested in the playoffs if the same teams were winning every time as I would know what to expect, however the finals would increase TV viewership as the games would be full of the top players competing against themselves.
The health of a team plays a big impact on the success of the team, both on and off of the court. If you are missing one of your star players, it will be harder to win games as you have less pure talent on your team, especially when playing against a tough team such as the Warriors or the Cavs. It could also potentially affect the rest of the team mentally as well. If their star player is injured, the team could potentially feel down and not perform as well. This is not certain though. Often times, an injury spurs the younger, less talented athletes to pick up the slack and perform at their peak, sometimes even better than they could usually perform.
Personally, having home ice is a big deal for me as a goalie. You have specific markers on the ice, such as specific ads on the boards, you know the way the puck bounces off of specific parts of the boards, and you are used to the actual ice. I do not know how much difference physically it makes for basketball, but I can speculate that it makes a huge difference mentally, just as it does in hockey.

  14. 1) While I do not have much precious knowledge about this teams, based off of reading the article it seems that having these teams in the finals can be both beneficial and a detracting from their viewership at the same time. On one hand, having the same two teams that have been in the finals four consecutive times can frustrate viewers who wish to see different teams. On the other hand, both of these organizations have a very large following both on the team level and with specific players.

    2) I think the health of a team plays a huge roll in the success of the team. Losing a player because of an injury not only can damage the skill level of a team but the team dynamic as a whole. There are certain players on teams such as captains which help mesh the team and their playing style with one another. At the same time, I think that it is possible for a team to be successful even with some injuries. We have seen teams across all sports be successful without key players. For some, these injuries give other players a chance to be more in the spot light as well as give value to the player that was injured.

    3) While I do not think that having the home advantage has the biggest effect on a game I do believe in the pennies in a jar concept. Because of this I would say that it is one of the many variables that can contribute to the success or failure of a team. I think that most sports do their best job to give both teams as equal as possible amounts of time at their home.

  15. I do not think that the Cavs. vs Warriors IV would have much of an effect on the NBA and for the ratings of the final. I do think that the ratings would be good because these are two of the most well known basketball teams, and these teams have a big rivalry going. Fanwise, I think watching the same teams in the finals over and over again, I think it may be a little boring for the fans.

I think that the role of the teams health would impact their chance of winning in the playoffs, but i do no think that the team would give up. If anything, it would make the team step up and work much harder. Losing a star player could definitely impact their chance of winning, but if everyone steps up, then it would help.

  16. 1. I think ratings wise the matchup would be good- it is a well known feud between the teams that people follow and love. I do think it gets old for fans supporting other team because it gets boring when your team loses and the same teams keep winning each year.
    2. Health in players not only affects their bodies, but their minds as well. if a team loses a star player they may feel as if they lost their support system and they cant succeed without that player. It definitely can and will effect the playoffs.
    3. Especially in basketball, home court advantage has an effect on the players. Fans are encouraged to try to distract and boo away teams, which can stress players out or prevent them from performing properly. Players feel more comforteble on their home court which is a factor as well.

  17. After reading the article I believe that having these teams in the finals can be beneficial as well as have its down sides. Since it is a well known feud between these teams the fans would follow and support the games. On the other had, having two teams that have been in the finals for 4 years can become boring to viewers having to watch the same game over again.

I think that the team's overall health has a big impact on how the team plays. I think that if a valuable team player gets out for being injured it will affect how the team plays together. The team will probably not play as well if they have one of their main players missing. This is especially true if a captain gets out for being injured, its harder for the captain to keep the team going while he is sitting on the sidelines. However, sometimes a key player being out does not impact the teams dynamic and allows other players to have more time playing. There have been many teams that have played very well after losing a big player, so it depends on the team and how they choose to play given their situation.

  18. Do you think that a Cavs vs Warriors IV final would be good or bad for the NBA and the ratings of the final? Based on what you read in the article, explain why or why not.
I think a Cavs Warriors final would not be good for viewers and ratings for the NBA finals. I think there is a flaw in the game of basketball and especially in the NBA. In such a high intensity game like basketball there are very talented players being paid tons of money. In the Lebron and Steph Curry era there is a drought of good players on other teams that don't make it to the finals. Hundreds of millions of dollars being thrown at players from successful and wealthy teams which causes super teams in the league. The Warriors are an extreme example of this idea. They have made it to the finals many times over the past 5 or 6 years. This is only because of the multiple players they’ve gotten because of their success. The Heat through 2010-14 had Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. They were called the big three because they won two championships in a row in 2013 and 2014. “Superteams” ruin competition which is why I think a Warriors Heat championship would be bad for the league.

  19. I think that a fourth Cavs vs Warriors final would not be good for the NBA’s ratings because it is what everybody is expecting. While I do not think it would hurt their ratings, I think other teams in the finals would bring their ratings up. People have already seen three Cavs vs Warriors finals, so only fans of basketball would watch the finals. On the other side, if there were two different teams in the finals, lots of people would watch because that would be what everyone is talking about. I think that a team’s health is a very important factor to winning in the playoffs especially. In the article, the author always refers to the Cavs’ potential success as LeBron willing his teammates. Without a team’s star player, they do not have that drive that keeps them going and allows them to win games.
