1. A bad reputation might not affect him in the moment, but it could factor into descisions made later on in his career. On his team, I don't think he will bring his whole team down, just be an outliar for the team.
ReplyDelete2. I feel like all teams are looking to be top tier teams so the additions are just the usual persuance of that top teir place.
3. His performance is really to be determined, we haven't seen him play with the Browns yet so things could certainly be different and these next few years could be the highlight of his career.
1. I don't think Baker's shady past will drag the team down because they know he's learned from his mistakes. The NFL gives players very hard times for their mistakes, but the mistakes he's made are not comparable to some of the mistakes others in the NFL have made. The Browns would not have picked him first overall if they felt his past would have any negative effects on their organization.
ReplyDelete2. The acquisitions the Browns have made this offseason have definitely put them in the right direction. Their talent is undeniable, but they're all very young. I don't think this is the year where they finally become a top tier team in the NFL, but within the next few years they will definitely make their way to the top.
3. Baker's progression all depends on how he is coached up. If the coaches put him in the right offense and the right positions to succeed, he could easily become a star in the NFL.
2. I do not think even with the additions of Carlos Hyde and Jarvis Laundry that the Browns will be a top tier team this year. I think they have made some great moves in the offseason and are headed in a good direction with Baker Mayfield as their new franchise QB, but I still think that the coaches and players will have a lot of tweaking to do before they are even a playoff team. They went 0-16 this past season, so despite their additions I believe they are still a while away.
ReplyDelete3. This question is hard to answer. Previously, almost every QB to be drafted by the Browns at #1 has been a bust or been traded away. However, I believe when these QBs have been busts, it has been more due to the coaching and lack of talent around them. The Browns have some nice pieces to build around on offense this coming season, and Mayfield will have a chance to work with these pieces that previous quarterbacks haven't had the chance to in Cleveland. I think this will greatly increase the chances of him playing well, although not as well as he did in college. Yet, he will definitely have a shot at reaching that level of production if the Browns stay headed in this direction.
2. Players such as Jarvis Landry, Carlos Hyde, and Tyrod Taylor are all solid adds for the Cleveland Browns. It's a breath of fresh air to see the Cleveland Browns organization making good decisions for once. Despite this, I think they made two important mistakes in this draft that could prevent them from being a top-tier team. First off, they passed on Sam Darnold and drafted Baker Mayfield. Darnold was ranked as the #1 QB in almost every expert ranking and has proven himself to not have the ego that has been a concern to critics of Mayfield. Second, they passed on DE Bradley Chubb who would've been a much better option than DB Denzel Ward any way you slice it. The Browns could be a top-tier team in a few seasons, but not this year.
ReplyDelete3. It's hard to say if Baker Mayfield will live up to his draft number. Baker's main objective in his rookie season is very simple. He has to prove that he is not the second coming of Johnny Manziel. Critics are already making comparisons of the two quarterbacks on the account of ego. It's not necessarily detrimental to an athlete to have an ego, but they need to have the skill and drive for success to back that up. If he can prove his critics wrong and show that he is not Johnny Manziel he could very easily be the franchise quarterback that the Browns have been looking for for the last 20 years.
1. Baker is young and with a lot of athletes across all sports, young players do dumb things or don't have the best pasts. However most of these guys usually mature enough and embrace team culture as they develop mentally and physically.
ReplyDelete2. No, they won't be a top tier team. No team will ever go from 0-16 to suddenly good in one off season. They have acquired some talent but it will take a few more years before they become legitiment. Look at the 76ers, they were historically bad for 5 years and now are in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
3. Who knows? In all sports, draft picks are never a guarantee but only time will tell. I personally don't know enough about the NFL or college football to determine if he will be good or not but we will see in due time.
1. I originally thought Baker Mayfield did carry some baggage, but now I believe his baggage is in the past. The Browns organization had to trust him enough in order to pick him. In order to be the number 1 pick in the draft a team must know you are the guy for the team. I believe Baker Mayfield's past will not drag him down and he will succeed. Moving onto question 2 I believe that now that the Browns have Baker Mayfield and other players like Jarvis Landry make them a contender. There is defiantly time to go, but the Browns have the foundation to me a good team in the NFL. The Browns of the past will not even be close to the Browns of the future due to the recent talent they have acquired.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that Mayfield's past will drag the team down because many NFL players/coaches believe that he is a solid guy. In the end it all comes down to what he does when he is with the team. I don't think the past matters but what he does in the future does. He has to prove everyone in the general public wrong about him. The browns will have at least 4 wins this year but will not be a top tier team. There are some great players on that team but Jarvis and Tyrod/Baker have never worked together before and Hyde is made of glass so he will be injured for at least part of the year. The Browns are rebuilding, that's a given, but this is not the year that they will be ready to compete with top tier competition. Also it is just hard to see the browns winning anything at this point. Baker better hope that he plays well in the upcoming games he is given the chance in because the Browns have shown no mercy to quarterbacks who do not prove themselves the instant they get on the field. He will immediately get replaced by Tyrod when showing any weakness. They also replace mid game with frequency which is something I have a problem with but it's not the time right now to discuss it. Bottom line is Baker needs to impress early in order to be allowed to play.
ReplyDelete1) After reading the Article it is pretty clear that this player does not present himself in a respectful manner. It is always a shame to see sports players do this when so much of their audience is young viewers that look up to these players as role models. With that being said I think with good people around him and good guidance he might be able to clean up his act and be a good person as well as a good player. I think it is possible that one player can damage the image of a team I am not sure if I can say for sure until we see how he handles himself with this NFL team.
ReplyDelete3) Despite his past problems with handling himself it seems as though he has the skills that most teams desire. Because of this I think his chances of being an asset to this team is very high. If this team was willing to pick him as their first pick they must really feel that he is right for the team. If the baggage was too much I think they would have passed on him however I am not their organization and only they will know the true thought process behind their selection.
1) I do think that Baker Mayfield’s shady past and bad reputation will drag the team down but could potentially have a bright future. Players who are not the best sportsmen usually get in trouble, thus hurting the team. He plays pivotal role at the professional level so if he does not stop his bad acts the Cleveland Browns will not be close to securing a playoff spot. A person who someone can easily point to is former Cleveland browns quarterback, Johnny Manziel. His reckless behavior and cocky attitude left the browns to have one of their worst seasons in franchise history. I think this could easily happen to Mayfield if he continues to have this terrible attitude and could be easily left suspended, dropped, or traded. I think that although this pick is risky it could end up having some reward. Despite his terrible sportsmanship, he is a top tier quarterback. At Oklahoma he was the runner up for the coveted Heisman trophy and proved to be spectacular on a large stage with his aggressive play-style and pocket passing ability. I think that if he gets his act together, can possibly be a force in the league.
ReplyDeleteWill Baker Mayfield's shady past and bad reputation drag the team down? why or why not?
ReplyDeleteBaker Mayfield’s history will not cripple the team in anyway because of his families work ethic and his athletic abilities. Unlike Johnny Manziel, the Browns last mistake, the Baker’s family is hard working because he did not grow up wealthy. To get to where he is now it takes a lot of hard work and dedication because people don't just hand out NFL contracts for free. Even the most talented need a good worth ethic to be as successful as Mayfield is. You can argue that the success he has had in the college will not translate into to NFL; however, I disagree because he is such a strong competitor on and off the field. His leadership abilities on and off the field are crucial for an NFL quarterback because it creates team chemistry. Baker Mayfield is well known for creating team chemistry because he is such a fun and competitive player. He reminds me a lot of the great quarterbacks in the league right now like Brady, Rodgers, and Russell Wilson. Baker will only help the Browns this year and in the future. His work ethic will outweigh the mistakes he has made in the past and he won’t let money and the spotlite get to him because his family made sure they grew him up with a good head on his shoulders.
I do not think his reputation will drag him down. I think going into the NFL he is starting a new professional career. I am a jets fan, and I thought originally that he would be picked 3rd with the Jets, which would have been good for the team. I think Darnold was a great pick for the jets since Mayfield was taken ahead. If he can be consistent in the future, he can make an impact. I think that with the addition of new players, the team is definitely heading in the right direction, but I don't think they'll be a top tier team this year. There is no way to really know if Baker will play as well as the Browns hope, because he hasn't really had the on field experience with them yet. In the future we will see how well he can play with the team and whether the risks associated with him were worth it.
ReplyDelete1. I personally do not think that Baker Mayfield's shady past will drag the team down. If he is developed properly, then his past actions do not necessarily determine his future. He also wants to play, which could potentially allow him to move past his past to become a better, more reliable person.
ReplyDelete2. I do think that the Browns are looking to become a top tier team. They are consistently adding top players to improve their chances at becoming a true playoff team with legitimate chances to win.
3. I personally do think that he will play as well as expected. He is a good quarterback, so if he does want to play, he will stop taking risks and actually play and act the way he is supposed to.
1. Overall, I personally don't think Baker Mayfield's shady past will drag down the team because if he truly wants to play he'll get his act into shape. However I do think that there is definitely a good chance that he may mess up and drag the team down.
ReplyDelete2. Even with the addition of players like Jarvis Landry I don't believe the Browns will be a top tier team in the league this year. Teams need to take time to develop and learn to work well together, so maybe this'll happen in the future but probably not this year.
3. I hope he'll play as well as the Browns hope he will, but one can truly never know for sure until we see how he works with the team.
Will Baker Mayfield's shady past and bad reputation drag the team down? why or why not?
ReplyDeleteI think that some of Baker Mayfield's actions may be criticized by some of his teammates. I don't think that his past will necessarily drag the team down. However, I do think it is viable that it might distract Baker and some of teammates from the task at hand, winning a football game. I think with all the hype being around the Baker being a potential bust is taking away from the team as a whole, but I don't think that it will impact any other of the players views on him.
With the addition of players like Jarvis Landry, are the Browns looking to be a top tier team in the league?
I think the Browns made some good picks in the draft this year after a horrendous season. I think they are obviously looking to be a competitor this season, but, I don't see it happening. Although they have some players that were very talented at the collegiate level, they are are still very young and lack experience. I think it will take a couple of seasons for the browns to really establish themselves as a legitimate team in the NFL.
Will Baker Mayfield play as well as the Browns hope he will play even with the risks associated with him? why or why not?
I think Baker will be decent but I don't think he is going to be a superstar his first season like some people are predicting. I think the transition from Oklahoma to the NFL is going to be tough for him, considering the fact that he is coming from the Big 12 were there is virtually no defense. I think the presence of strong defensive teams will shock him a bit but with experience he will adapt.
I do not think Baker Mayfield’s shady past will drag down the team. In the ESPN article, may people said that he earned everything he has ever gotten in his life, he is humble, a great player, etc. With this life-changing opportunity, and the added fact that he learned from his mistakes, he will most likely focus and not throw it all away. I think that Mayfield will not play as well as they hoped at first, but will eventually figure out how to play against the pros. They mentioned that because of his height, he has a different play style, and I think this will either work really well for him and throw people off guard or it will be a struggle for him to make it work.
